A flat tyre on the motorway is among the most stressful roadside situations a driver can face. The high speeds, heavy traffic, and limited stopping options make it a genuine emergency — but staying calm and following the correct procedure dramatically reduces the danger.
Immediate Steps When You Feel the Tyre Go
Don't brake suddenly. Grip the steering wheel firmly, signal left, and carefully move to the nearside lane. Continue checking mirrors and signalling until you reach the hard shoulder or an emergency refuge area. Keep your speed steady — do not stop in a live lane. If you have any control at all, aim for the next motorway exit or a service area.
On the Hard Shoulder
Pull as far left as possible on the hard shoulder, ideally with your wheels turned toward the verge. Switch on hazard lights. If it is safe to do so, exit the vehicle from the left-hand doors, walk up the embankment, and stand well behind the safety barrier. Do not stand between your car and oncoming traffic. Call 999 if your situation is dangerous, or Highways England on 0300 123 5000 if you need assistance.
Getting Help
Changing a tyre on a live motorway hard shoulder is extremely dangerous and should be avoided if possible. Emergency refuge areas and service stations are safer. For 24/7 emergency mobile tyre assistance across the M1, M62, A1(M), and other West Yorkshire motorways, call Pegasus Mobile Tyres — we'll dispatch a technician immediately, day or night.
